Multilingual Counselling
for refugees & asylum-seekers
What is the Multilingual Counselling Service?
This unique service provides free mother-tongue counselling to migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in over 23 different languages and dialects. Many of our referrals have survived exile, torture, human trafficking and modern slavery. Our service addresses the needs of people fleeing political and economic turmoil to establish new lives yet bringing with them the trauma and psychological distress of migration and persecution. It is also one of very few services open to victims of human trafficking and modern slavery, many of whom have no recourse to public funds.
When clients are facing practical issues that are negatively impacting their well-being, we signpost or refer them to our network of pan-London services such as English classes, housing/immigration advice, foodbanks, or community organisations where they can be in contact with others from their home country. To meet the complex needs of refugees and asylum seekers, we have also developed psychosocial group support.
In 2024 Waterloo Community Counselling proudly celebrated 20 years of unwavering support for refugees and asylum-seekers through our dedicated language counselling service. What began as a small initiative with just a handful of counsellors and interpreters has now grown into the Multilingual Counselling Service which boasts over 50 counsellors offering therapy in over 23 languages. Last year alone, we supported 394 individuals from 75 different countries.
The people we serve have often endured unimaginable traumas and life-altering experiences, both in their home countries and as they seek refuge here in the UK. A considerable number of our clients have experienced torture, modern slavery, human trafficking, domestic and / or sexual abuse or persecution due to their sexual, gender, religious, ethnic or political identities. Sadly, their challenges continue in London, where they face issues related to housing, poverty, social isolation. Through our service, we offer something uniquely powerful: the opportunity for clients to receive counselling in their mother tongue. This linguistic connection promotes a deeper, more meaningful therapeutic relationship, which significantly enhances the mental health outcomes for our clients.
