In the last few months, the refugee social group has enjoyed several wonderful outings. Following the end of the Gardening Club the group were able to enjoy a late summer beach trip to Broadstairs with the wonderful folk from Southwark Day Centre for Asylum-Seekers. Two coachloads full of eager beachgoers made the journey from London to enjoy a sunny, sandy and super day at the seaside. Thanks to our partners at SDCAS for making this possible.
In September the plans were to visit the Saatchi gallery to view their collection, and in particular to see the exhibition ‘Homelessness: Reframed’. Blessed by a sunny day, the group walked all the way from Waterloo taking in some of London’s most recognisable sites. A walk over Westminster Bridge and the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben lead the group all the way to Buckingham Palace, before a lunch stop off at Hyde Park. Exploring London on foot was a fantastic experience, especially for the members of the group who had never been to such parts of London before!
Then, in October we were invited by the Old Vic theatre to bring a group of over 50s to join their ‘Matinee Idols’ programme for the first time. Our group had the pleasure of seeing the production of Tom Stoppard’s ‘The Real Thing’, having had lunch and a fascinating Q&A at Waterloo Action Centre with the production’s Intimacy Director.
